Our Eco Promise: How Compatible Cartridges Help the Planet

Every year, hundreds of millions of ink and toner cartridges end up in landfill worldwide. At ReloadInk, sustainability isn't a marketing afterthought. It's central to why we exist. Here's how choosing compatible and remanufactured cartridges makes a genuine difference.

The Scale of the Problem

The numbers are staggering. Globally, an estimated 1.1 billion inkjet cartridges and 500 million laser toner cartridges are used each year. The vast majority end up in landfill or incineration.

In Australia alone, roughly 25 million cartridges are sold annually. Of those, fewer than 10% are recycled or remanufactured. The rest, over 22 million cartridges, go to waste.

Consider what each cartridge contains:

  • Plastic: a standard inkjet cartridge contains around 40 grams of plastic, most of it engineering-grade polymers derived from petroleum. A laser toner cartridge can contain over 1.5 kilograms.
  • Metals: aluminium, steel, and copper are used in cartridge construction and circuitry.
  • Residual ink and toner: chemical compounds that can leach into soil and groundwater when cartridges break down in landfill.
  • Foam and rubber components: seals, rollers, and padding that take centuries to decompose.

A single laser toner cartridge takes an estimated 450 years to decompose in landfill. That means every cartridge ever manufactured in the history of laser printing still exists somewhere on this planet.

The Carbon Footprint of a New OEM Cartridge

Manufacturing a brand-new OEM cartridge from virgin materials requires a significant amount of energy and resources. The production of a single laser toner cartridge consumes approximately 3.5 litres of petroleum in raw materials and energy. For inkjet cartridges, the figure is smaller but still meaningful when multiplied across millions of units.

Then there's the shipping. Most OEM cartridges are manufactured in Asia, Europe, or North America and transported thousands of kilometres to reach Australian consumers. The freight emissions alone add a measurable carbon footprint to every box.

How Remanufacturing Changes the Equation

Remanufactured cartridges take a used OEM cartridge shell and give it a second life. The process typically involves:

  1. Collection and sorting: used cartridges are gathered through recycling programmes and trade-in schemes, then inspected for structural integrity.
  2. Disassembly and cleaning: each cartridge is taken apart, cleaned of residual ink or toner, and inspected component by component.
  3. Replacement of wear components: parts that degrade with use (drum units, wiper blades, seals) are replaced with new components.
  4. Refilling: the cartridge is filled with fresh, high-quality ink or toner formulated to meet or exceed OEM specifications.
  5. Testing: every remanufactured cartridge is print-tested for quality, yield, and reliability before it leaves the facility.

This process uses up to 70% less raw material and significantly less energy compared to manufacturing a cartridge from scratch. The existing plastic shell, metal framework, and electronic components are all reused rather than discarded.

Compatible Cartridges: Built with Sustainability in Mind

Our new-build compatible cartridges are also designed with environmental responsibility at the forefront. While they use new components, they're manufactured to be recyclable and produced in facilities that adhere to ISO 14001 environmental management standards.

Many of our compatible cartridge suppliers use recycled plastics in their shells and have implemented closed-loop manufacturing processes to minimise waste. By purchasing from suppliers who prioritise environmental standards, we ensure that even our new-build products carry a lighter footprint than their OEM equivalents.

The Numbers: Environmental Impact at a Glance

Metric OEM (New) Remanufactured Saving
Raw materials used (laser toner) ~1.5 kg plastic + metals ~0.3 kg replacement parts Up to 80%
Petroleum consumed per cartridge ~3.5 litres ~1.0 litre Up to 70%
CO2 emissions per cartridge ~4.8 kg ~1.5 kg Up to 69%
Landfill waste per cartridge Entire unit Wear parts only Up to 97%

ReloadInk's Commitment

Sustainability is woven into everything we do at ReloadInk. Our commitments include:

  • Prioritising remanufactured products: wherever a reliable remanufactured option exists, we stock it and recommend it.
  • Responsible packaging: we use recyclable cardboard packaging and have eliminated single-use plastics from our dispatch process.
  • Cartridge return programme: we encourage customers to return used cartridges to us for responsible recycling. Get in touch to find out how.
  • Supplier accountability: we only partner with manufacturers who hold ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, ensuring quality and environmental standards are met.
  • Carbon-conscious shipping: we consolidate shipments and use Australia-wide delivery partners who are actively reducing their transport emissions.

What You Can Do

Every cartridge choice is an environmental choice. Here are simple steps you can take:

  1. Switch to compatible or remanufactured cartridges. It's the single most impactful change you can make to reduce your printing footprint. Browse our range to find cartridges for your printer.
  2. Print mindfully. Use draft mode for internal documents, print double-sided where possible, and ask if a document really needs to be printed at all.
  3. Recycle your empties. Never throw cartridges in general waste. Return them through a recycling programme or send them back to us.
  4. Spread the word. Many people still don't realise that compatible cartridges are a viable, high-quality alternative. Share what you know with colleagues and friends.

Reload. Reprint. Repeat.

Our tagline isn't just a catchy phrase. It's a philosophy. We believe that printing doesn't have to come at the planet's expense. By reusing, remanufacturing, and choosing responsibly made compatible cartridges, we can dramatically reduce the environmental toll of printing while still delivering the quality and reliability you need.

Together, one cartridge at a time, we can make a real difference.
